Dieu De pagoda
Dieu De pagoda is located on Ho Thanh riverbank, near Gia Hoi bridge and Dong Ba river, at 100B Bach Dang street (Phu Cat district, Thua Thien Hue province). The pagoda played a significant role in the history of Buddhism in Hue. As it was originally the residence of Emperor Thieu Tri before his enthronement, it already had a very beautiful landscape with a spacious garden and green trees.

In 1844, the pagoda was built by the order of Emperor Thieu Tri on a large area of His Majesty’s former residence. However, through many years of war and historical conflicts, the pagoda did not remain intact as it was before. In 1855, under Emperor Ham Nghi’s reign, as the royal palace was occupied, the Imperial Court was forced to reside and work here. At that time, the pagoda was used for many different purposes: Trí Tuệ Tịnh Xá building served as the residence for the Head of Thua Thien province, Tường Từ Thất building was turned into a treasury and mint, etc. In 1887, the pagoda’s architectural constructions were mostly destroyed and not restored until the twentieth century.

Nowadays, after being renovated, Dieu De pagoda still retains its ancient features and unique architectural works. Having a huge precinct, the pagoda is lying neatly around four streets: Bach Dang street at its front, To Hien Thanh street at its back, Dieu De street on the left and Chua Ong street on the right. In general, the pagoda has a fairly large area. The outermost area is two-story Tam Quan gate and Ho Phap tower is from the above. The pathway built of Bat Trang brick leading to the Main Hall with trees shading along two sides is behind Tam Quan gate.
