The green transition plays a crucial role, not only bringing economic benefits but also ensuring sustainability in daily life. This is particularly significant as Vietnam aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

1. Vingroup not only is a prominent corporation in Vietnam but also has made a name for itself globally. As one of Vietnam’s leading multi-sector corporations, Vingroup operates mainly in industrial technology, commercial services, and social philanthropy.

According to Ms. Le Thi Thu Thuy, Vice Chairwoman of Vingroup and Global CEO of VinFast, Vingroup is currently focusing on two key strategies: developing an ecosystem of technical and technological infrastructure, and connecting global intelligence by collaborating with leading technology partners worldwide. These efforts aim to integrate the most advanced and innovative technologies into Vingroup’s products and services.

“We are always interested and pioneering in the field of green transition, with our electric vehicle system and eco-friendly public transportation. In 2024, with over 87,000 vehicles sold in Vietnam, VinFast became the country’s number one automobile brand. This is also one of the key orientations that Hue is aiming at -  to become a green and sustainable city,” stated Ms. Thuy.

On February 21st, Hue City and Vingroup officially partnered to create new development opportunities. The goal is to accelerate the city’s progress toward a green transition, digital transformation, and sustainable development. This collaboration also provides Vingroup with an opportunity to examine and maximize the company’s strengths within the ancient capital.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Green Transition Cooperation between Vingroup and Hue City outlines a detailed program for green transition, green growth, and sustainable urban development from 2025 to 2030. The key areas include green tourism, green industry, green agriculture, green urban infrastructure, green transportation, and green lifestyles.

“Vingroup would step by step promote the use of electric vehicles all over the city while studying and implementing a project on using electric buses in the city area, which aligns with Hue’s actual conditions and roadmap for green energy transition,” added Ms. Thuy.

City leaders believe this partnership marks the beginning of a long-term collaboration, accompanying Hue in researching and developing sustainable solutions.

2. Before partnering with Vingroup, the green transition concept was not new to Hue. Over the years, the city authority has implemented various policies and mechanisms to support investment in researching and applying science and digital technology, to build digital governance, digital society, smart urban services, and a greener living environment.

The Hue-S application has proven highly effective in smart urban management. The city has also successfully collaborated with multiple organizations to implement sustainable development projects, collaborated with the United Nations Development Program in researching and implementing the green electric transport initiatives; cooperating with the Japan International Cooperation Agency in the Hue City Water Environment Treatment Project,  especially, with the Phu Son Waste-to-Energy Plant Construction Project with a processing capacity of 600 tons per day. These are prime examples of Hue’s commitment to green transformation.

Additionally, the city has hosted numerous seminars on green transition. At these events, city leaders have consistently emphasized to businesses and investors the priority of adopting green economic models as an alternative to the traditional urban economic models. The aim is to shift toward green growth, enhance competitiveness, and ensure rapid, efficient, and sustainable urban economic development.

3. Becoming a centrally-governed municipality is a major milestone, showing that Hue has entered a new phase, a phase of construction and development with a new mindset. This transformation provides a critical foundation for Hue to evolve into a smart, culturally rich heritage city, leveraging its potential and advantages to drive rapid and sustainable growth. This also helps to strengthen the city’s role as a regional and national center for culture, tourism, specialized healthcare, education and training, and science & technology.

At the Conference on the Thua Thien Hue Province (now Hue City) Master Plan Announcement, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh directed the city to focus on developing three key economic centers and efficiently allocate resources to ensure comprehensive and effective spatial development.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh also emphasized the need for developing the marine economy, tourism economy, and heritage economy, following a green, digital, and circular economy model. The strategy includes optimizing the potential of Chan May - Lang Co Economic Zone, Phu Bai International Airport, Chan May Deep-Sea Port, Lang Co - Bach Ma region, Tam Giang - Cau Hai Lagoon, Hue Imperial City complex, and other economic and industrial zones.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Phuong, Chairman of the Hue City People’s Committee, the city’s growth strategy is based on economic restructuring and innovation, with tourism as the leading sector, information and communication technology as a breakthrough, and high-tech industry and agriculture as foundational sectors, towards green economy development, circular economy, digital economy and transformation, smart urban economy, marine economy, night economy, and cultural industry, aligning with its strategic role at both the regional and national levels by fully utilizing its potential and advantages to attract investment from all economic sectors - especially the private sector.

“We are creating the most favorable conditions for businesses and investors to examine, invest in, and develop successful projects in Hue. Our goal is to grow together, thrive together, and establish Hue as both a desirable place to live and a prime destination for investors,” emphasized Chairman Nguyen Van Phuong.
