To celebrate the Year of the Snake, the Hue Monuments Conservation Center has introduced a photo collection showcasing Nhat Binh, the traditional attire of Hue, set against the majestic backdrop of ancient tombs and palaces in the former capital.

Historically, Nhat Binh was reserved for empresses, princesses, and noble concubines, meticulously crafted with signature imperial patterns symbolizing power and nobility.

Drawing inspiration from foreign Phi Phong designs, the Nguyen Dynasty refined this attire, creating a unique and distinctive look. The neckline of Nhat Binh is a broad rectangular design, with the front panels tied together to form a rectangular shape, which is how it got its name.

Every stitch and pattern reflects the intricate artistry of traditional Vietnamese craftsmanship. Dominant colors such as red, yellow, and green not only enhance elegance but also symbolize rank and solemnity.

In the early Nguyen period, Nhat Binh was paired with a white skirt and phoenix headdresses, tailored to one’s rank. However, from the late 19th century onward, it was worn with white trousers and broad headscarves. This style has been preserved to this day, with a more diverse and vibrant color palette.

Nhat Binh is a valuable heritage of the Nguyen era, increasingly embraced by the younger generation for formal events. Its popularity has extended beyond Hue, spreading across the country and even to overseas Vietnamese communities.

The image of a young woman in Nhat Binh exudes elegance and sophistication. With its intricate patterns and graceful hues, the attire perfectly complements the gentle beauty of Vietnamese women.

It can be said that Nhat Binh is more than just clothing—it is a work of art. Wearing it allows young women to embody a beauty that is both traditional and modern.
