The highlight is the historic North-South railway, a 1,726-km route connecting Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Built and completed in 1936, the railway was repaired after the war and became known as the Reunification Express.
For travellers looking for scenic experiences, Lonely Planet recommends several memorable routes. The journey between Da Nang and Hue is described as a must-do train trip, as it crosses the Hai Van Pass, considered the most scenic section of the North-South railway. The train winds along the coast, offering spectacular views of the East Sea.
Other recommended journeys include Hanoi-Ninh Binh, a short two- to three-hour trip providing convenient access to the Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex, and Ho Chi Minh City-Phan Thiet, a four-hour direct service connecting the southern metropolis with one of the country’s popular beach destinations. Phan Thiet is known for windsurfing and the sand dunes of Mui Ne.

For travellers heading to northern Vietnam, the overnight Hanoi-Lao Cai train provides a popular route towards Sapa. Passengers can choose sleeper cabins, including premium private carriages, before continuing by road from Lao Cai to Sapa.
Although Vietnam’s railway system is slower than modern rail networks, its leisurely pace gives visitors the opportunity to experience overnight train travel and enjoy the changing landscapes of the country.
