Hue is home to plenty of hostels (most accommodation here are called "homestays," but they have dormitories and are basically hostels) and one of the cheapest options is Hue Amazing HomeStay. However, the word "Amazing" shouldn't be taken too literally here.
The Location
There is only a small backpacker zone in the newer part of Hue. It's an area with a lot other hostels, bars, and restaurants. The hostel is not that easy to find -- you really have to look for the sign that indicates it, because it's hidden in a small alley.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There is one dormitory; it has 9 beds (three double bunks and one triple bunk). It might be a bit scary to climb in the top one. The beds are ok, though you can't sit up straight in the triple bunk. Beneath the beds are lockers, but your stuff is not safe at all. Anyone can easily access the contents of the locker by lifting up the mattresses of the bottom bunk beds.
There is one bathroom. It contains a shower, a sink, and a toilet. There are hooks and shelves. The toilet is in a strange place, making it very hard to sit comfortably. The whole bathroom is pretty dirty. Toilet paper sucks here.
Common Spaces
The building is in very bad condition -- it's moldy and damp. When going down the stairs, you'll notice mops on the floor to catch the dripping water. Disgusting! Also, you are expected to take your shoes off in the house, but the house is not very clean, so you'll have dirty feet all day long. On the first floor, there is a dining area. Here, they offer you breakfast -- they give you two eggs, some bread, fruit, and a coffee. It's not bad, but not great either. On Thursday evenings, you can buy cheap dinner from them. The kitchen table is absolutely dreadful -- it's so dirty. There is Wi-Fi, and it's actually pretty great.
Summary
Staff are friendly on the surface, but they seem to have their own agenda. Staff are very reluctant to turn the air conditioning on, and they even turn it off an hour or so later. You have to keep asking them until they are tired of hearing it. During the day, they also just have a nap on your bed as well. Next to that, they reprimand you for leaving the door open, when air conditioning is on, while they just allow their toddlers to push the door open and leave it like that. If you're staying in Hue, don't spend any time in this hostel. Hue Amazing HomeStay is not amazing at all.
