Address: Thai Hoa Palace - Can Chanh Palace, Hue Imperial City
Opening Time: January 1st (lunar calendar)
Introduction:

In the Nguyen Dynasty (1802 - 1945), Lunar New Year was a festival ritual of the Nguyen Dynasty, held on the first day of the Lunar New Year with the ritual of formal court at Thai Hoa Palace and semi-formal court at Can Chanh Palace.

History:

According to historical records, in order to prepare for the Lunar New Year, the Ministry of Rites prepared ritual tools located at the court in Thai Hoa Palace, to put in the court in Can Chanh Palace. The ceremony was reenacted with the participation of the key team of artists of Hue Royal Traditional Arts Theatre. The roles are shown as Mandarin of martial arts and literature, prince, mandarins, officials of the Ministry of Rites, and a large number of ministers, courtiers...

At the beginning of the program, the king departed from Can Chanh Palace, to Dai Cung Gate, and to Thai Hoa Palace to personally witness the ceremony... During the ceremony, mandarins will offer congratulations to the king. The mandarins only grant the grace of the king on the occasion of the Lunar New Year with solemn rituals associated with the repertoire of Dai Nhac, Tieu Nhac.

In the second part, the king left Thai Hoa Palace to return to Can Chanh Palace to continue the Lunar rituals. Here, the younger brothers and princes will worship the king. Next is the declaration of the banquet and spring reward of the king. Finally, the banquets given by the king will take place in Can Chanh Palace and Ta Vu, Huu Vu, Ta Dai Lau House, Huu Dai Lau House.

Highlight:

In order to honor the beauty of Hue's heritage, and at the same time introduce the traditional beauties associated with the ancient Royal New Year, above all the humanistic spirit of the ancestors, in 2021, for the first time, the Hue Monuments Conservation Center held a Nguyen Dynasty Lunar New Year festival and was re-enacted in the form of a theatricalization of the scene by concurrent methods.

Lễ Nguyên đán thời Nguyễn

Specifically, all two contents of both ceremonies were staged at one location, Thai Hoa Palace, which is both suitable for reality (Can Chanh Place is destroyed); and suitable for tourism (this reconstruction does not reconstruct and restore the Lunar New Year in an original way because many conditions do not allow and do not match the actual requirements).

Therefore, the meaningful narrative element is connecting, explaining, interpreting, and guiding the content to orient the exhibitors.

Notably, the script was staged with the integration of "current events" such as reminders of the court, and the people to overcome difficulties together, as the king's instructions: "I from the day after my career, take the fate of the sky; I follow the Emperor/ The works of Can Chanh take care of all my heart/ The weight of agriculture is dedicated/ It is the norm of Ban Soc, taking good care of the land/ Last year, the storm and flood are constantly/ There are still more epidemics/ Has comforted the province to meet natural disasters and floods/ Has commissioned the opening of a supply warehouse to help people hunger... The winter closes with the old year/ Spring coming to Tet to open the earth and heaven."
