Hai Van Pass was constructed in the 7th year of the Minh Mang reign (1826), located at the summit of Hai Van Pass, at an altitude of 496 meters above sea level, part of the Bach Ma - Hai Van mountain range, in Lang Co Town, Phu Loc District, Thua Thien Hue Province, and Hoa Hiep Bac Ward, Lien Chieu District, Da Nang City. This place is not only known as the "First Grandiose Landscape of the World" but also holds significant cultural and historical value. It was a military fortress with various structures including ramparts, warehouses, barracks, and cannons. It was classified as a National Monument by Decision No. 1531/QD-BVHTTDL dated April 14, 2017, by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism. This is also the only National Historic Site in Vietnam managed by two localities, Thua Thien Hue Province and Da Nang City.
A Large Number of People and Tourists Visit Hai Van Pass on the First Day of Free Admission
Earlier, at the end of 2021, the Hue Monuments Conservation Center, in coordination with the Department of Culture and Sports of Da Nang City, organized the groundbreaking ceremony for the project to preserve, restore, and promote the value of the Hai Van Pass monument. The total project investment is over VND 42 billion, funded 50% by the budget of Da Nang City and 50% by the budget of Thua Thien Hue Province, with the project timeline extending until the end of 2023. On July 25, 2023, the People's Committee of Thua Thien Hue Province issued Decision No. 1779/QD-UBND regarding the approval of the adjusted project for the preservation, restoration, and promotion of the value of the Hai Van Pass monument. After more than 2 years of restoration work, the project has now essentially ensured the restoration and preservation of several original structures of the monument, such as the "First Grandiose Landscape of the World" gate (facing Da Nang), the Hai Van Pass gate (facing Thua Thien Hue), the barracks, and the defensive wall system.

Hai Van Gate will open free of charge to the public and tourists from today until the two localities agree on an appropriate ticket pricing plan to unify the management and promotion of the monument's value.
Hai Van Gate opening to visitors will be a fresh check-in spot for locals and tourists on their journey to explore the heritage of Central Vietnam.
