Introduction:

Like many other villages in Thua Thien Hue province, Trung Kien communal house was built during the establishment of the village community. It served as a cultural and religious center for the community, where rituals and ceremonies were held to honor the village's guardian deities, such as Thanh Hoang, and other revered spirits, following the belief in "a hundred gods gathering." It was also a venue for community gatherings, discussions on village affairs, and the organization of festivals during traditional holidays or the second lunar month.

Trung Kien communal house represents significant historical, cultural, and architectural values. It preserves tangible cultural values with its traditional Vietnamese architectural style typical of folk belief structures. Alongside tangible values, the communal house also holds intangible cultural heritage. Despite urbanization influences, the communal house area still retains the fundamental characteristics of an agricultural community, especially during annual ceremonies honoring the ancestors who founded the village and defended the homeland.

Although renovated several times, the communal house still maintains its ancient and traditional charm, similar to many other communal houses in Thua Thien Hue province. This affirms Trung Kien village's rich cultural and historical heritage in the development process of Thuan Hoa - Phu Xuan land, now known as Hue.

Through two resistance wars against French colonialists and the US imperialists, during the struggle for national liberation, Trung Kien communal house stood witness to historical events, marking the significant contributions of the villagers to the revolutionary cause in Phu Loc district, Thua Thien Hue province. It is known as the site of many historical events and the headquarters of the revolutionary movement before the liberation, bearing witness to the brutal torture under the regime of Ngo Dinh Diem with the infamous Law 10/59.

History:

According to the elders, Trung Kien communal house, located in Loc Tien commune, Phu Loc district, was initially built small, close to the foot of the mountain, near Dieu Ngo Pagoda, along the road to Bo Ghe Waterfall. The communal house was rebuilt in the early 19th century, along National Highway 1A, in front of the present-day People's Committee of Loc Tien commune, with a structure of 5 compartments and 2 wings, with tiled roofs.

In the year of Đinh Suu (1937), Mrs. Duong Thi Phu (Duong Thi An), the grandmother of King Bao Dai and the wife of King Dong Khanh (1885 - 1889), who was a descendant of the Duong family in Trung Kien village, provided financial assistance for the reconstruction of Trung Kien communal house and donated a large self-portrait painting inlaid with gold. On the left side, it is inscribed "In the year of Bao Dai, Đinh Suu, the sun shines brightly", in the middle are the large characters "Trung Kien Communal House", and on the right side is written "Duong Thi An, the virtuous Queen Mother of Thai Hoang Emperor, established this."

In 1945, comrades Tran Chi Cuong and Nguyen Dinh San gathered revolutionary forces at Trung Kien communal house, preparing weapons to overthrow the authorities. The communal house was then used as a venue for organizing activities and revolutionary training. On January 6, 1946, during the first election of the National Assembly after liberation, people gathered at Trung Kien communal house to cast their first ballots, with drums, flags, banners, and slogans.

In 1958 - 1959, following the division of the country into two regions, Trung Kien communal house came under the control of the Ngo Dinh Diem regime. They implemented Law 10/59 and used Trung Kien communal house as a place to detain and torture hundreds of revolutionary families across the district. Here, they subjected people to brutal torture reminiscent of the Middle Ages, including tying hands and feet and hanging them upside down on communal house beams, torture with chili, soap, electricity, acid, and more.

During the Lunar New Year of Mau Than in 1968, our troops attacked Trung Kien communal house, eliminating hundreds of enemy forces and restoring the tranquility it once had, which continues to this day.

Artistic Value:

On March 21, 2024, Trung Kien Communal House was classified as a provincial-level historical relic by the People's Committee of Thua Thien Hue Province under Decision No. 708/QD-UBND.
