Thuy Xuan Incense Village

Located on Huyen Tran Cong Chua Street, about 7 kilometers from the city center to the southwest, Thuy Xuan is a pretty village with green trees nestled at the foot of Vong Canh hill and by the Perfume River.

It is a famous village of incense makers in the ancient capital city. Since almost every household in the village engage in incense making, the whole village is alight with a rainbow of colored bamboo sticks from the early morning in associated with the aroma of sandalwood pervading the air. 

 

Previously, local makers sold incense sticks to traders around the city. However, with the development of tourism over the last 7 to 8 years, the number of visitors to the mausoleum of Emperor Tu Duc and Vong Canh hill has been increased remarkably. As the incense village of Thuy Xuan lies on the way to such tourist destinations, it easily catches the curiosity of domestic and international visitors to learn the technique of joss stick rolling. The village has now become one of the tourist attractions to the West of Hue city. Formerly, bamboo sticks used for making incense only have two distinct colors: red and brown. However, in order to catch visitors’ eyes, diligent workers dye the sticks with many other colors. The amazing colorful sight of incense stick bunches, twisted together like blossomed flowers by the road side, has a great attraction to visitors from near and far.
