The Nine Dynastic Urns are not merely decorative artifacts, but Vietnam’s earliest illustrated compendium of biodiversity. Among the 162 embossed motifs on the bronze urns of the Nguyen Dynasty in Hue, 90 depict distinctive species of animals and plants native to Vietnam.
These engravings vividly showcase various forms of wildlife and vegetation, with many carvings capturing key features of each species, making them easily recognizable through bronze reliefs.
The 54 plant motifs on the urns can be grouped into six categories: staple crops, fiber plants, vegetables and spices, fruit-bearing plants, flowers, and medicinal or aromatic herbs.
Animal representations include fish, mollusks, insects, birds, quadrupeds, and mythical or symbolic creatures.
The Nine Dynastic Urns can be viewed as a visual encyclopedia of Vietnam’s rich and diverse ecosystem, reflecting an ancient understanding and appreciation of nature that remains valuable to this day.
