Introduction:

Dieu De pagoda is located on Ho Thanh riverbank, near Gia Hoi bridge and Dong Ba river, at 100B Bach Dang street (Phu Cat district, Thua Thien Hue province). The pagoda played a significant role in the history of Buddhism in Hue. As it was originally the residence of Emperor Thieu Tri before his enthronement, it already had a very beautiful landscape with a spacious garden and green trees.

Dieu De is the third pagoda which is considered as one of the 20 most renowned structures of the ancient capital of Hue. The pagoda was constructed by Thieu Tri King in 1842-1844. The pagoda was built on a 5,000 square meter platform in his former home in 1807.

 

History:

The pagoda was built under the reign of Thiệu Trị and is famous for its four low towers, one to either side of the main gate, while the other two flank the sanctuary. Two towers contain bells, while the other two contain a bell and stele, respectively. The main ceremonial hall contains a statue of Gautama Buddha, flanked by Bodhisattvas Bồ Tát Phổ Hiền and Bồ Tát Văn Thù Sư Lợi.

Highlight:

Dieu De Pagoda is not as captivating as Thien Mu Pagoda, but it has its own charm. The central chamber of the pagoda is called the ‘dai giac,’ this chamber is the place for worship. The ‘la thanh’ system was built using durable and sturdy materials and is next to the pagoda. Dieu De Pagoda had several Buddha statues within its walls before. These statues came from Giac Hoang Pagoda.The citadel played a vital role in the anti-Diem Buddhist rebellion that rattled Vietnam in the 60s, and precluded US involvement. All throughout the 60s, the pagoda was an integral meeting round for anti-war activism.

In the 1960s, Dieu De Pagoda was the starting place of the procession of the Buddha Statue, with floats and tens of thousands of Buddhists from Hue City coming to Tu Dam Pagoda on the occasion of Buddha's Birthday every year.

Architecture:

Nowaday, Dieu De Pagoda are being rebuilt with bigger and larger area. It is being reinforced the old main hall, changed its design, moved the location of the new main hall forward.

Artistic Value:

Today, Dieu De is a well-known attraction that tourists cannot afford to miss.
